Functional Capacity Evaluation

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) may be used with an injured patient for the purpose of assisting the return to work process.  It consists of a battery of standardized tests that measure the patient’s strength, range of motion, endurance, hand function etc and subsequently compares those results to industry standards.

The results may then be used to identify restrictions/limitations related to their ability to return to work and/or identify the appropriateness for referral into a reconditioning program or rehabilitation.  An FCE assists the disability case manager to determine the timing of a safe and gradual return for the patient. It may also help in determining whether the patient may benefit from any changes or adaptation to the environment.

At United Therapies Rehabilitation Centre, the ARCON FCE system is utilized.  The ARCON FCE evaluation results are widely accepted in North America by disability evaluators and insurers as an industry standard.  The system utilizes utilizes state of the art evaluation tools and software.

Testing protocols include dynamic lifting, isometric testing, range of motion, dexterity, tolerances, and functional movement/posturing.

If you are unsure if a potential referral is appropriate, please feel free to call us to discuss.
